Superman The Ride- Updated Review
Superman: The Ride is a 208ft tall Intamin Hypercoaster located at Six Flags New England in Agawam, MA. The ride boasts a 208 foot tall lift hill, a 221 foot drop into a tunnel, and speeds of up to 77 mph. Those are some pretty insane stats. This review will be split up into different categories with my final thoughts at the end. The ride will be rated on a 1-10 scale. I know that I've already reviewed this coaster, back in 2016, but it ran so well this year that I believed it warranted a new one.
Scenery and Theming
The ride is located on the edge of the park, directly bordering the Connecticut river. Riders get incredible views of the river from the lift hill, as well as panoramic views of the park to their right. While there isn't much else surrounding the ride landscaping wise, there is theming all throughout the ride. Six Flags did a pretty good job with the theming on this ride, as there are multiple fly throughs along the course, as well as the Superman score being played on the lift and brakes. The rides queue line also has multiple comic boards showcasing the storyline about how the ride and theme came to be. While it's not a completely immersive themed experience, it's very good for a hyper coaster at a regional theme park.
Theming and Scenery: 7/10
Trains
The trains on this ride are not great. They feature both a seatbelt and a lap-bar. The lap-bar is very bulky, and makes for a little bit of an uncomfortable ride, but they are far from the worse restraints I have experienced. The trains themselves look nice, with a chrome, red, and blue color scheme. For a good experience with these trains, just hope the attendant doesn't staple you and you'll be fine.
Trains: 5/10
Airtime
The airtime on Superman is incredible. Its pure, sustained, ejector airtime. Each hill feels as if the rider is going to be flung out. My favorite hill has to be the one located right before the "S-Shield" effect. The airtime on this ride is just amazing!
Airtime: 10/10
Speed & Pacing
Superman is a fast coaster, as it reaches a top speed of 77mph. The ride keeps its speed very well throughout the course, and at no point does it really slow down. The coaster speeds right into the brake run at the end of the ride, and must decelerate very quickly as it has so much speed left!
Speed & Pacing- 10/10
Drop
Superman The Ride has a great first drop! Riders fall 221 feet into an underground tunnel, and those towards the back of the train get some great airtime on this drop! Personally, I wish it was a little bit steeper, but it's a great drop no matter what.
Drop- 8/10
Smoothness
Superman The Ride is 18 years old, and still running great! While there is some shuffling of the trains in the spaghetti bowl element, the ride is still extremely smooth. With a little more TLC on the trains, I think the ride could be almost glass smooth again.
Smoothness- 8/10
Superman is an amazing attraction, and it's still my favorite coaster overall. Between the speed, airtime, and theming, Six Flags New England has a real gem on their hands. With the way it ran during the 2017 season, it looks as if its only getting better with age.
Overall Score- 10/10 Amazing Ride
